At a Steiner Playgroup, families are welcomed either at a Steiner school or at a Steiner family home and garden. The groups are led by a qualified early childhood leader. Stories, songs and movement circles will be thoughtfully planned and in tune with the seasons.
A Steiner playgroup will have a predictable routine and dependable structure. A consistent weekly rhythm contributes to a nurturing and home-like atmosphere. Children become familiar with and secure in the rhythm of their weekly activities. A mother with her son had been part of Sunshine Garden for 3 years, one day she shared "Micah doesn't know the days of the week but he somehow always knows when it's playgroup day!"
The program at a Steiner playgroup is unhurried and meaningful. Parents are reminded to put their mobile phones away in favor of activities such as creative play and baking, through which children develop emotionally, physically and intellectually in mixed-age groups.
Young children learn by imitation, so a Steiner Playgroup is held in an environment that is worthy of the young child's imitation.
A Steiner playgroup will provide the space not only for new friendships and community to form but will also gently guide and support mothers and fathers with their parenting role and will teach handcraft skills like woodwork, sewing, knitting, felting to spark the imagination and encourage parents to practice mindful presence.
Families will sit at the table for a shared morning tea of freshly baked organic bread, seasonal fruit and veggies and organic chai tea. You will identify a Steiner playgroup by its appearance as well: furniture and toys are made of natural materials, mostly wood, silk, wool and cotton and the majority will be handmade as children are very sensitive to their environment, so the things they will be in contact with are carefully thought of. Children will find basketfuls of shells, rocks, bark, veils and tree blocks to play with.
There will be a beautifully cared for garden with a sandpit, rocks, tree stumps to balance, herbs and flowers.
When it comes to Sunshine Garden, outdoor play in all weather is a core element in each family's day, with the natural ebb and flow of breathing in and breathing out activities, supporting the children's and parents need for a healthy rhythm to their morning, providing opportunities to be in direct contact with our bush surroundings and the elements, building resilience and reverence for nature.
